We’re All In The Same Boat!

photoVerses 6 and 7 of Nehemiah chapter 3 offer few details so we will just let them stand as they are. Verse 8 gives us more to learn if we know a little history.

Next unto him repaired Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, of the goldsmiths. Next unto him also repaired Hananiah the son of one of the apothecaries, and they fortified Jerusalem unto the broad wall. – Nehemiah 3:8

During the time the nation was divided into Israel and Judah, this portion of the wall was broken down by Joash, king of Israel. Men, who were supposed to be united in the service to the Lord, had become more self-serving than God honoring. It resulted in wars from within which can be more dangerous than attacks from the enemies of the world. This wall was rebuilt by King Uzziah of Judah. At the time of Nehemiah, this wall was still intact so they fortified the city unto it.

Sometimes we have to rebuild, not from external attack but from the result of infighting.  Our enemy is not within the church. We should war against the rulers of darkness not fellow children of God. We need to humble ourselves and seek unity.

Be careful about how much you shoot holes in someone else’s boat. We are all in the same boat!
