When it seemed like everything that could come against them had come against them, the Israelites remained strong. We need to remember that Nehemiah was working and suffering right along side his fellow countrymen. Yet, he remained their steadfast leader and exhorted them to continue on. He reminded them that God is terrible to His enemies and that they should keep building for the safety of their own families. Their courage was blessed by the Lord and Sanballat learned that Israel had found out his plan to attack and so he called it off. Nehemiah then adjusted the rebuilding plans to include defense measures as well. Everyone had their building assignments and a sword. They had to be weary, but they knew how important the work was.
We must remember to always be aware of possible attacks from Satan. Jesus warned us that the devil goes about liking a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. As we build up our lives and our families’ lives in the Lord, Satan gets all the more enraged. Thankfully, the Lord has provided us with a sword. The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, will help us fight our battles and maintain our walk in Christ. The Lord gave us the sword, all we need to do is pick it up and read it!
