Wow, That Was Fast!

So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days. And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God. Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them. For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah. Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear. Nehemiah 6:15-19

52Despite all the efforts of the enemies of Israel, the walls of Jerusalem were completed in a record breaking matter of time, just 52 days! It is amazing what can be accomplished when the people of God work together and trust the Lord.

However, we can also see from this lesson that the struggle against evil is not over when our defense has been made. Tobiah was ashamed but that enraged him all the more against Nehemiah. He continued his evil alliances with the nobles inside Jerusalem who fed him information. Tobiah also used a marriage into one of the major builder’s families, Meshullam, to try and gain more intelligence about Nehemiah through spying. Nehemiah wisely ignores all these wicked influences and distractions. His enemies were very busy trying to bring him down but Nehemiah just stayed the course. Eventually, Tobiah sees all his plans are not getting him the intelligence he needs to defeat Nehemiah so he just fires off another threatening letter.

Scoffers may mock your work as a Christian, but continue on in prayer and duty. For what you will find is that, when God uses you in a mighty way, the scoffer shames himself and must admit that God has blessed you! Also, surround yourself with wise counsel. Fellow Bible students are the best help in making decisions. Finally, beware of spies. The devil is not going to attack head on when he can infiltrate without your knowledge.

With a hammer in one hand and a sword in the other, “build up” and “fight on” good brother!
