Choose Your Friends Wisely

Please read Nehemiah 13:23-31.

unequally-yokedI find it very interesting that among the last things mentioned in the reforms Nehemiah records is that of mixed marriages with the pagan cultures around Israel. Perhaps it is because this is the devil’s best tool for drawing the children of God away from their righteous walk! This admonition talks about marriage but it can be applied to all relationships.

Among those that Nehemiah mentions who were brought down by evil spouses was Solomon. Other than the Lord Jesus, Solomon was probably the wisest man that ever walked the face of the earth! If he was led away by bad relationships and keeping the wrong friends, why should we think we would do better?

Paul instructs quite clearly,

Be not deceived: evilcommunications corrupt good manners. – 1st Corinthians 15:33

This is not to say that we should not try to help those in sin to overcome it. However, the general trend through history has proven that if we hang out with evil people, we start acting like them rather than the other way around.

Fellowship is vital to our devotion to God. John says,

And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. – 1st John 4:21

But we should choose our friends wisely! We should surround ourselves with other godly people seeking righteousness. If we only fellowship with the Lord’s people for a few moments on Sunday, we are going to be fighting a losing battle agains the world’s influence on us.
